They showed no interest in a control plume that consisted of background air.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“In a previous experiment with fruit flies, we found that exposure to an attractive odor led the animals to be more attracted to visual features,” says Floris van Breugel, a postdoctoral scholar in the lab of Michael Dickinson, professor of bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“This was a new finding for flies, and we suspected that mosquitoes would exhibit a similar behavior.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThat is, we predicted that when the mosquitoes were exposed to CO2, which is an indicator of a nearby host, they would also spend a lot of time hovering near high-contrast objects, such as a black object on a neutral background. ”\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003ESmell the CO2\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003ETo test this hypothesis, the researchers did the same CO2 plume experiment, but this time they provided a dark object on the floor of the wind tunnel.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey found that in the presence of the carbon dioxide plumes, the mosquitoes were attracted to the dark high-contrast object.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn the wind tunnel with no CO2 plume, the insects ignored the dark object entirely. While it was no surprise to see the mosquitoes tracking a CO2 plume, “the new part that we found is that the CO2 plume increases the likelihood that they’ll fly toward an object.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis is particularly interesting because there’s no CO2 down near that object—it’s about 10 centimeters away,” van Breugel says.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“That means that they smell the CO2, then they leave the plume, and several seconds later they continue flying toward this little object.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ESo you could think of it as a type of memory or lasting effect. ”\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENext, the researchers wanted to see how a mosquito factors thermal information into its flight path.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIt is difficult to test, van Breugel says. “Obviously, we know that if you have an object in the presence of a CO2 plume—warm or cold—they will fly toward it because they see it,” he says.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“So we had to find a way to separate the visual attraction from the thermal attraction.  ”\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003EMosquitoes like it warm\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003ETo do this, the researchers constructed two glass objects that were coated with a clear chemical substance that made it possible to heat them to any desired temperature.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey heated one object to 37 degrees Celsius (approximately human body temperature) and allowed one to remain at room temperature, and then placed them on the floor of the wind tunnel with and without CO2 plumes, and observed mosquito behavior.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey found that mosquitoes showed a preference for the warm object.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBut contrary to the mosquitoes’ visual attraction to objects, the preference for warmth was not dependent on the presence of CO2.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“These experiments show that the attraction to a visual feature and the attraction to a warm object are separate.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey are independent, and they don’t have to happen in order, but they do often happen in this particular order because of the spatial arrangement of the stimuli: a mosquito can see a visual feature from much further away, so that happens first.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EOnly when the mosquito gets closer does it detect an object’s thermal signature,” van Breugel says.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003EElegant females\u003C\/h3\u003EInformation gathered from all of these experiments enabled the researchers to create a model of how the mosquito finds its host over different distances.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey hypothesize that from 10 to 50 meters away, a mosquito smells a host’s CO2 plume.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAs it flies closer—to within 5 to 15 meters (16 to 52 feet)—it begins to see the host.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThen, guided by visual cues that draw it even closer, the mosquito can sense the host’s body heat.\u0026nbsp; \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis occurs at a distance of less than a meter.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“Understanding how brains combine information from different senses to make appropriate decisions is one of the central challenges in neuroscience,” Dickinson says.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“Our experiments suggest that female mosquitoes do this in a rather elegant way when searching for food.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThey only pay attention to visual features after they detect an odor that indicates the presence of a host nearby.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis helps ensure that they don’t waste their time investigating false targets like rocks and vegetation. \u003Cbr \/\u003EOur next challenge is to uncover the circuits in the brain that allow an odor to so profoundly change the way they respond to a visual image. ”\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EPublished in the journal Current Biology, the work provides researchers with exciting new information about insect behavior and may even help companies design better mosquito traps in the future.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBut it also paints a bleak picture for those hoping to avoid mosquito bites.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“Even if it were possible to hold one’s breath indefinitely,” the authors note toward the end of the paper, “another human breathing nearby, or several meters upwind, would create a CO2 plume that could lead mosquitoes close enough to you that they may lock on to your visual signature.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E“The strongest defense is therefore to become invisible, or at least visually camouflaged. As we well know, it is a small fly with potentially a lethal bite.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ELast August marked the centenary of the opening of one of the world’s greatest engineering feats – the Panama Canal. In mid-Victorian times, the French engineer De Lesseps designed and opened the Suez Canal.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHe later went to engineer a similar sea level canal through the Isthmus of Panama. Fighting against incalculable odds through high temperatures and rainfall, frequent landslides and geological complexities, the construction of his canal was a near-disaster.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHis greatest threat was the rapid decline in his workforce between 1881 and 1889 when 20,000 of the canal diggers died of malaria and yellow fever. Another 12,000 people died of the same diseases whilst constructing a parallel railroad to bring in heavy earth-moving machinery.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EFortunately the American President Theodore Roosevelt and his engineer William Taft came to the rescue breaking through the isthmus to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via a lock-canal system.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIt was through the ingenuity of Roosevelt’s chief medical officer US surgeon-general Dr William Borgas, who realised that malaria and yellow fever had first to be eradicated before engineering works could safely proceed.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis was achieved by draining swamplands, ponds, and introducing public water systems, draining household rain butts, fumigating workers’ living quarters and nearby villages and by providing all workers with mosquito nets for their nightly slumbers.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBorgas almost eliminated mosquito breeding areas by pouring oil on stagnant pools and by persuading villagers to fire metal pans containing sulphur or pyrethrum with wood alcohol to allow fumes to emanate.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EToday Panama City, nine degrees north of the Equator, is totally free of malaria, dengue and yellow fevers.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EKuching, at two degrees north, has few outbreaks annually of these diseases thanks largely to Borgas’ pioneering preventative measures in 1906.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EEven in the 21st century, these tiny, irritating insects lead to 250,000 deaths worldwide each month in countries in half the globe.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EDDT frequently used as an eradicating insect spray in the 1950s has now been replaced by pyrethrum and DEET modifications as mosquitoes have developed resistance over time to chemicals.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhilst medical staff now have the medications to cure malarial and yellow fever patients, it is through the continued research of molecular biologists and geneticists worldwide that the creation of a vaccine seems almost there.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ELaying as many as 200 eggs every two weeks and with 3,500 species of mosquito worldwide, humans are certainly outnumbered.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EOnce on a trail uphill to the lookout post on Sapi Island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, offshore from Kota Kinabalu, I disturbed a pack of angry macaques, which decided to chase me into a swarm of female mosquitoes.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe latter avidly attacked my perspiring back until my blood flowed like water. It was a combination of my sweat and the rate of CO2 that I expired in running that attracted them to me.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe Anopheles and Aedes aegypti varieties of mosquito have troubled our world for about 100 million years, with females laying their eggs in relatively still or stagnant water.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThese eggs hatch into larvae, which have the capability to breathe air through their snorkel-like extruded tails and thrive on other insects, bacteria and algae in their watery environment.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EEventually, if not digested by fish, most reach the pupa stage with an adult mosquito developing inside.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAlready that mosquito may have, through its genes, acquired malarial properties and the hatchlings fly off in search of blood … perhaps yours or mine.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMalarial parasites are thus transmitted to humans in the Anopheles mosquito’s search for food. Bitten by the Aedes aegypti variety – the stripped one – could see us developing yellow fever, dengue fever or Chikungunya – the latter two are viral infections.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EGenetic Modification (GM) research into mosquitoes has revealed that breeding vast populations of male mosquitoes holding lethal genes to other mosquitoes is working.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThese males fertilise female mosquitoes, thereby producing sterile types of mosquito which are killed in the egg stage of their development. Smoking my pipe when outdoors and spraying my feet, legs and head with a citric acid-based repellent and wearing long sleeved shirts and trousers at night have, so far, worked.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn jungle and in summer Arctic warfare training, soldiers are still taught to use the peelings and zest emitted from limes, lemons and oranges to rub on exposed flesh.
