Warmer weather has returned to the Tuscarawas Valley, and that means outdoor barbecues, Little League games, swimming in the park — and the return of backyard pests.


Insects and rodents are on the move, looking to satisfy their need for food, water and shelter.


Ants are the No. 1 nuisance pest, according to Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association of Fairfax, Va., which represents 7,000 pest management professionals in the United States and around the world.


A survey has shown that carpenter ants are one of the most destructive insects in this part of the country, causing structural damage to houses. Henriksen said there are 700 species of ants, and even those that don’t attack wood in people’s homes still can be an annoyance.
