A Novel System For Trapping Mosquitoes wins award

Kota Kinabalu: UMS researchers participating in the British Invention Show (BIS) 2015 competition won two Platinum Special Awards, four Gold, two Silver and one Bronze.

The competition was held for four days at the Barbican Exhibition Centre, London, from October 21- 24.

The Platinum Special Award:

International Invention of The Year Award (Industrial Classification) was achieved by Prof. Dr. Patricia Matanjun (Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition) with the title of her innovation,

A-Tempeh: A canned tempeh food product with anchovies- a mixture of fresh seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) with tempeh.

Special Award Platinum:

International Innovation of the Year Award (Consumer Classification) it was won by Prof. Dr. Chua Tock Hing (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) and Dr. Muralindran Mariappan (Faculty of Engineering) entitled

Smart Z: A Novel System For Trapping Mosquitoes. These innovations are designed to attract female Aedes mosquitoes, the carriers of dengue. With this product, it will be able to control the female mosquito population and thus reduce the spread of dengue.

Both of these products also won the Gold award.

Two other Gold Award were won by researchers from the Faculty of Education and Psychology namely Assoc Prof. Dr. Sabariah Shahrif's innovation titled, Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques, an Approach To Enhance motivation Among High-Risk Students and Dr. Mohamad Nizam Bin Nazarudin with his innovation of Developing Training Aids In Using Mastery Learning in Supporting IRB get into Rugby Programme For Beginners.

This participation in the BIS 2015 was a first for the UMS delegation which was led by Dr. Mohamad Nizam Bin Nazarudin with seven other researchers.
